WHAT’S A FARM TO DO

My grandpa bought this farm some 60 years ago
He paid 1300 dollars so I’m told
And the fields have weathered drought and they’ve fought the flooding, too
But there’s somethin’ more to fight before it’s through

CHORUS:
Dollar bills are being planted on the family farm
If houses can be raised upon the soil
If we say, “NO,” they say we’re crazy
We say, “YES,” we’ll lose our land
So what’s a farm to do...when its enemy is man

Well, my grandpa labored hard on this Union County ground
He’d harvest corn and wheat from dawn ‘til dusk
Some years he’d just break even and sometimes he’d lose his shirt
But he raised his family well upon this dirt

CHORUS

They say, “Poor old farmer, we’ll huff until you sell
Or we’ll huff until you puff -- we’ll turn your heaven into hell”

Seven kids sat at this table on my grandpa’s farm
Where my Daddy learned the values of his life
He can feel his family’s love here - He remembers, oh so well
He takes a breath and says, “I WILL NOT SELL”

CHORUS:
Dollar bills are being planted on these family farms
If houses can be raised upon the soil
If we say, “NO” they say we’re crazy
We say, “YES” we lose our land
So what’s a farm to do, ah, what’s a farm to do
Yes, what’s a farm to do...when its enemy is man
